Miami Mentorship and Making Adjustments

Young Manny at Brito Highschool.

The GOATs of sports, from Tiger to Kobe to Messi, always seem to have stories of the mentors that helped them along the way.

Yonder and Manny were no different, and they credit it a lot to the Latin American culture and Miami as a hotbed for baseball talent (and nice weather).

First of all, the question we all want an answer to is, how did a grade 11 El Ministro get Yonder’s number?? In a different life maybe he was a cold-calling salesman.

In all seriousness, for a 17 year old kid to call Yonder asking to workout, that takes guts for sure. But to follow up exactly eight months later, just as Yonder told him to do, that shows the type of person Manny was / is, and the character needed to succeed in the big leagues. Whether it’s sports or business or any part of life, we have to be willing to ask for help and stand on the shoulders of giants.

Su’a and Moylan also touched on the importance of making adjustments and embracing failure. The willingness to make an adjustment is fully dependent on the size of your ego. Big ego? You probably won’t be willing to change that much. The more you’re willing to adjust, the more you’re admitting, “I might not know it all.” And that’s huge if you want to be great like Yonder and Manny.

Seriously, this conversation was packed full of gems, you have to watch and listen to the full show.

Quick Singles

Could this have been Su’a?

  1. In a parallel universe, Su’a was a UFC Champion with a strong Jiu-Jitsu background. If only he kept practicing with his neighbors, the Gracies

  2. Yonder brought up a great throwback story when he went to Hoz’s house to help change his swing. They did straight dry hacks in the living room until 3 am

  3. Manny shared the embarrassment of his first massage in the big leagues…🤣
