Frozen Four 2024: Tears, Saves, and Future NHL Stars

Pink Whitney was flowing at the Frozen Four in Minnesota, where fans of all (legal) ages were catching a nice little glow before the NCAA Championship game. From 22-year-olds to 72-year-olds, people were loving the Pink, especially as the weather turned warmer. We’re pretty sure it hit 99,999 out of the 10,000 lakes in Minnesota, according to some reports!

But the action wasn't just off the ice. Cutter Gauthier made headlines with his confident pregame interview predicting tears from the opposing team (do tears of happiness count?). While his boldness was admirable, it was the Denver Pioneers who played the best when it mattered most, suffocating BC's offense in the championship game winning 2-0.

Huge shoutout to Matt Davis for playing absolutely lights out all tournament. The 22 year old Albertan saved 142 / 145 shots he faced in the Frozen Four and was deservedly named Most Outstanding Player.

Think Leonard shed a tear or two after this?

The ice was full of future NHL stars with almost too many to mention.

James Hagens is a future #1 draft pick and Zeev Buium (his brother Shai got drafted by the Red Wings in 2021) looked incredible on defense for the Pioneers. Ryan Leonard was the most dominant guy every time he was on and Cutter Gauthier was flying all over the ice (congrats to him getting his first NHL assist). Will Smith was fun to watch too, man that kid has some hands.

If all the BC freshman go back next year…let’s just say Whit isn’t too confident in BU beating them.

Yotes —> Utah

It was great having Frank Seravalli from Daily Faceoff in the studio to help walk us through the latest in the Coyotes saga.

The Yotes haven’t had a winning season since 2019/20 and they haven’t even had a set arena. Sometimes it has to get worse before it gets better but Biz and the rest of the Coyotes fans won’t get to see that happen in Phoenix, at least for now.

The team was officially purchased Thursday by the Smith Group (owners of the Utah Jazz) for $1.2 Billion.

Former Coyotes owner, Alex Meruelo, has a five year option to reactivate the franchise if he can get a stadium built and follow other NHL thresholds. Seravalli didn’t seem too confident NHL leadership wanted Meruelo back, although he was confident there would be a team in Phoenix again one day.

For now, the focus shifts to Utah, the Smith Group, and the question everyone is thinking: Can a NHL franchise thrive in Salt Lake City?
